718-9BGJBBABAXXX is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Price but Not So Good in Several Ways Installed in 1966 Pontiac LeMans to replace bent axle housing. Product arrived quickly and appeared to be of excellent quality. This is a Ford axle housing modified to fit 1966 GTO/Lemans. The mounts for control arms lined up perfect as well as the brake hardware. I have Wilwood disc/parking brake and I had to enlarge the hole in the bracket assembly to allow for the larger Ford bearing to pass through. Some modifications were needed on the housing. There is no provision for filling the housing with fluid. I had to drill and tap for a filler plug. I also added a drain plug. There is no hole in the axle flange for access to the bearing retainer bolts. It is extremely difficult to reach these bolts and probably impossible to properly torque them down without this hole. I had to drill a 1" access hole to allow for a 9/16" socket. There is no provision for securing the brake lines to the axle. I did not notice this until I had the housing in car so I opted for a high strength epoxy to add a couple of retainers instead of trying to weld near the gas tank. I also had to fabricate a bracket to secure the rubber brake line connection to the axle. The spring mounts on the Pontiac axle are a flat plate with a 1/2" hole. This axle has a smaller plate with hemispherical (not cylindrical as shown online) protrusion with about a 1 1/2" hole. The OEM spring plate will not secure the spring to this mount as intended. You must install a large spacer on bottom and if you turn the OEM mounting bracket upside down it seems to secure the spring. However, I am not confident of this and will have to see if it remains securely in place after some use. The lower control arm bracket is different from the Pontiac also. The shock absorber has to be turned 90 degrees and bolts to the rear of the control arm instead of to the side. The bottom of the shock is therefore offset two or more inches to the inside of the car. On my car with stock tail pipes there is less than 1/4" clearance between the shock and the exhaust. On my first drive with a few potholes and bumps there were no clearance issues but there might be with a heavier load or larger bumps. The lug bolts installed are too long to use original equipment lug nuts so the had to be shortened by 1 1/2 inches. I was unaware when I purchased this (because I wasn't told) that there is another axle housing available that includes the fill plug and it costs $30 less! The photo of this part should show the complete housing - that would help to understand what you will get. It should also show the bare metal product they ship instead of the painted one shown. I rated quality excellent - the welds are excellent, the finish is top notch, and the housing is about 7/16" thick. The value is good. The price is very good (especially if you get the one with fill plug) but the extra work needed to make adjustments reduce the value. Installing a rear end is not generally an easy job but with that considered the installation was somewhat easy. I rated installation average because of the extra work needed to add fill hole, drill access holes, mount springs, and the other little things I mentioned above. The appearance is excellent although it was bare metal and needed to be painted. The photo by the way shows a painted housing. Overall recommendation: If you want to save money and don't mind spending twice the time to install the axle then this is a good choice. Otherwise, spend more and but one from another manufacturer although there are few to choose from. .
