Tools at a touch of the finger

Garmin's Edge 830 cycling computer packs an impressive array of features into a slim case that operates through a slick touchscreen interface. All of Edge 830's high-performance features are right there, so you can dive right into serious training, with sophisticated tools to provide the metrics you need to really improve. You can customize the screen to display the info that's important to you when you ride, so you'll always have the metrics you need right in front of you.

Get where you want to go

Edge 830 has Garmin's Cycle Map preloaded so you can create courses with turn-by-turn directions for both on- and off-road adventures. Real-time routing lets you change plans (and course) easily, while address-specific routing takes you exactly where you want to go. During your ride, its high-sensitivity GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo receiver records speed, distance, time, plus ascent and descent, while a built-in barometric altimeter yields precise elevation measurements. And with Garmin's ClimbPro feature, you'll always know how much longer you've got to go on those epic climbs.

Plenty of options

The Edge 830 works with all ANT+-enabled power meters (not included) so you can track your power output in watts when you ride — one of the most effective training methods available. And when it's paired with a heart rate monitor (not included), Edge 830 tracks your heart rate, letting you train in the proper heart-rate zone to optimize your workout. Check out this sensor bundle to buy the Edge 830 along with a heart-rate monitor and other training sensors.

Stay connected

Edge 830 also taps into the power of your smartphone through the Garmin Connect™ Mobile app. Features like live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and more are ready to access before, during, and after your ride. In conjunction with a compatible smartphone, you can even message to other riders in your group when you're on the road. And when you're out on a long ride or race, your friends and family can follow your progress on Garmin Connect with real-time map updates.

This versatile device is compatible with Strava live segments, so you can track your progress while you're riding on your favorite climbs and fly zones. You'll receive alerts when the segments start and finish, and even instant leaderboard rankings once you've finished the segment.

Stay safe and aware

Edge 830 is fully compatible with Garmin's Varia smart lights and rear-view radar, ensuring that you'll know what's happening on the road around you and that drivers are aware of your presence. Don't worry about rain showers — you can quickly scope out threatening weather conditions on the Edge 830's water-resistant color display while leaving your smartphone safe and dry in your pocket or jacket. Do you ride a mountain bike? Check out this Edge 830 bundle that includes a mountain-bike mount and other mountain bike accessories.

More details on the Garmin Edge 830

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Edge 830 is a compact, GPS-enabled advanced bicycle computer with navigation and connected features, such as live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and the ability to send and receive course maps. The Edge 830 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts, and the Out-Front bike mount, allowing you to mount it on multiple bikes.

Touchscreen Display: The Edge 830 has a 2.6" backlit, high resolution color touchscreen LCD (1.5"W x 2.0"H), with a display resolution of 246 x 322 pixels. You can view the maps, maneuver through the menus, and make selections directly on the touchscreen display. There are also buttons on the front edge and side for powering on the device, mark new laps, and start/stop the activity timer. The display will show your chosen route, elapsed time, speed, distance, time of day, and calories burned (if applicable).

GPS with Garmin Cycle Map: The Edge 830 has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with the preloaded Garmin Cycle Map with turn-by-turn directions for on and off road courses. The maps will alert you of upcoming turns, and can guide you back to the route, if you get off course. When you turn on the unit outdoors, it finds satellites quickly, so you can start your ride quicker. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. If training indoors, you can turn off the GPS receiver to save battery power.

High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver: The unit features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which will stay locked onto satellites, even near tall buildings or under tree cover. By default, the device uses the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate overhead satellites. When you're in locations with poor sky visibility, you can use a combination of GPS and GLONASS (Russian satellite system), or GPS and Galileo (European Union satellite system) to obtain a more accurate position. Using GPS and another satellite system together will reduce battery life more quickly than using GPS alone.

Waterproof: The Edge 830 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7, which means it is protected from most types of inclement weather, as well as splashes of water. It can also withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the edge-mounted controls, and the USB port has a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion. The device also has a wide operating temperature range of -4° to 140°F.

Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android 5.0 and up / iOS 10.0 or later) using the Garmin Connect mobile app. While connected, you can receive smart notifications on your device as you ride. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge 830 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.

LiveTrack: Another connected feature of the Edge 830, LiveTrack, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats.

Controls: Most of the controls are located along the edge of the display. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the front panel buttons to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power and backlight button is located on the side.

ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge 830. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:

  • Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge 830 is paired with the optional Premium Heart Rate Monitor (or other compatible HRM), the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances.
  • Speed and Cadence Sensors: The optional Speed and Cadence Sensors measure your speed and pedaling strokes per minute. The Edge 830 has a Non-Zero Averaging option to let you include or exclude the zero values (when you're not pedaling) when calculating your power ratings.
  • Varia Bike Radar/Lights: Varia Rearview Radar and other Smart Bike Lights work with the Edge 830 to keep you safe as you ride on the highway. Varia Rearview Radar can alert you of vehicles approaching from behind. Varia Smart headlights and tail lights integrate with the Edge 830 and change intensity with your speed.

User Profile: The Edge 830 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.

Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect.

Courses: The Edge 830 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.

Strava: The Edge 830 is compatible with Strava, a cycling and running website and mobile app, which lets you set goals, training plans, get power analysis, and compare your results with other athletes in your age and weight class. You can download Strava segments to the Edge 830 for competing against your previous segment times, or others who ride the same route. Segment results appear in real time, showing the Distance to Go and Time Ahead (or Behind) your competitor.

Incident Detection: A built-in accelerometer can detect if you have difficulty along the route, and will send your location coordinates to an emergency contact. When an incident is detected, a message appears on your device and paired smartphone, indicating your contacts will be notified after 30 seconds have elapsed. If you do not need assistance, you can cancel the automated emergency message. You must be connected to Garmin Connect mobile app, with emergency contacts entered, for Incident Detection to properly function.

Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.

Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.

Ride Data Storage: The Edge 830 built-in memory stores up to 200 hours of your ride data until it can be uploaded to your Garmin Connect account. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. The memory also stores up to 100 routes and 200 waypoints, favorites, and locations.

Virtual Partner: During your workout, you can use the Virtual Partner to help you meet your goals. The Virtual Partner rides along with you and provides incentive for you to keep up or stay ahead. If necessary, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner during the ride.

USB Port: A Micro USB port is provided on the front edge of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer. A water-resistant cap keeps moisture out.

Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Typical battery life for the device is approximately 20 hours.

Optional Power Pack: The Garmin Charge Power Pack is an external battery that plugs directly into the Edge 830 to give you up to 24 hours of additional battery life. The power pack is designed to attach to the under side of the Flush Out-Front mount or other handlebar mounts. It has five electrical contacts that can match up with the contacts on the bottom of the Edge 830 to power the device without a cable.

Battery Save Mode: You can enable the Battery Save mode to extend the battery life. When you turn on Battery Save mode, the screen turns off during the activity. To wake it up, you can manually press a key, or enable automatic alerts. GPS tracking points and sensor data are recorded less frequently. Speed, distance, and track data accuracy are reduced. You will need to disable Battery Save mode to use all of the device features.

Mounting: The Edge 830 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem using the included standard "quarter-turn" mounts. Two sizes of rubber mounting bands are included for best fit. Two complete mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. The included Out-Front Bike Mount lets you put the device in front of the handlebars for easier, heads-up positioning and increased safety.

Optional Edge Power Mount: This Edge device is compatible with Garmin's Power Mount, which can help keep your device fully charged as you ride. The Power Mount is designed for eBikes (electric bikes) which use built-in motors or batteries to augment human power to make hills and headwinds seem more manageable. A proprietary connecting cable is needed to transfer power from eBike to the Power Mount. The mounting tabs on the back of the Edge device connect to the mount's Power Pod to keep the Edge device charged. Required connecting cables are available for Bosch and Shimano Steps eBikes, and for eBikes or battery banks with a USB-A port.
