About the Garmin inREACH Mini
Safety first
Safety first
The thrill of worldwide adventuring is going where few dare to go and being rewarded with extraordinary spectacle. However, in my boldest outdoorsy moments, I've been aware that the slightest thing going wrong has the potential to snowball if Mother Nature gets angry. Garmin's inREACH Mini offers peace of mind in a easily stashable, rugged device. This hand-held satellite communicator provides two-way texting capability far, far from the last place you saw bars on your smartphone. With a subscription to Garmin's suite of services, you're guaranteed a rapid response if you run into trouble.
Send an SOS
Garmin doesn't take an SOS lightly. When you trigger an emergency alert through the global satellite network, the GEOS 24/7 emergency response team will track your device and contact the nearest emergency responders.
Keep in touch
It doesn't have to be an emergency for you to reach out to the civilized world. With GPS-based location tracking, friends and family can keep up on where you are, and you can post updates on social media. When you are in range of cell towers, Garmin's free Earthmate app syncs your inREACH Mini via Bluetooth to give you access to unlimited maps and NOAA charts. If you're part of an expedition, text communication with the rest of your crew is easy as long as you're all using compatible Garmin handhelds, wearables, or other mobile devices.
Weather alerts
With Garmin's optional weather service, you'll receive weather updates on your inREACH Mini for your current location or waypoints along the way.
All built into a tough device
An IPX7 rating and an impact-resistant structure make the inREACH Mini a durable companion for your next adventure. Its internal, rechargeable battery lasts up to 50 hours in tracking mode and up to 20 days in power-save mode. Garmin supplies a microUSB cable for charging.

More details on the Garmin inREACH Mini
Product Research
Features
Overview: The Garmin inReach Mini is a compact satellite communicator that lets you keep in touch with others when you're out of cellphone range. inReach Mini can send and receive two-way text messages via the global Iridium satellite network (satellite subscription plan required). The palm-sized device has a long-lasting rechargeable battery, and comes with a carabiner and a spine mount adapter.
Iridium Satellite Network: The inReach mini communicates on the Iridium Satellite Network, a group of 66 active satellites that provide 100% global coverage. inReach mini lets you send and receive custom and preset text messages or emails. In addition, when an emergency arises, you can send an SOS message to GEOS, a professional global monitoring system operating 24/7. The GEOS staff can respond to your message, track your device, and notify emergency responders in your area. Use of the Iridium Satellite Network requires an active subscription. Annual plans, with a 12-month contract, are ideal for year-round usage, and feature lower monthly fees. For seasonal or occasional use, Monthly Freedom plans (minimum 30-day commitment) let you pay for airtime only when you need it.
Garmin Earthmate App: Included with the purchase of an inReach device is the Garmin Earthmate app. You can connect your smartphone or mobile device to the inReach mini via Bluetooth, and use the app to download maps that you'll need for your adventure. Several types of maps are available, including North America TOPO maps, public lands, aerial imagery, and NOAA charts. Even when you're off the grid, you can use the device to determine your current location, navigate a route, set and find waypoints, and track your progress. The app also lets you view elevation, maximum speed, distance, and time en route. While paired, you can use your smartphone to send two-way text messages, and link to social media. Garmin Earthmate is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 9.2 or later, and Android devices running version 4.1 and up.
Display: The Garmin inReach mini is equipped with a 0.9" x 0.9" monochrome, transflective memory-in-pixel display. It has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, and is easily readable in sunlight.
Rugged Design: The device is rugged and lightweight, weighing only 3-1/2 ounces. Its rubberized covering is weather-resistant, and gives it a water rating of IPX7 (withstands exposure to up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 mins). The control buttons are fully covered, and the USB charging port is protected by a protective rubber flap. You can clip the inReach mini to your clothing or backpack using the supplied carabiner clip. A spine mount adapter (included) can be installed over the loop, if desired. There is also a slot on the top for attaching a lanyard (not included).
Controls: inReach mini has controls on both sides for maneuvering through the menu selections. Up/down arrow buttons for scrolling through the menus, "OK" for selecting an option or to acknowledging a message, and a "back arrow" to return to the previous page, or canceling a command. The power button is located on the top of the unit.
Messaging: inReach mini sends and receives text messages using the Iridium satellite network. Messages can be sent to an SMS phone number, email address, or another inReach device. You can create a list of preset messages using explore.garmin.com for later use on the device. You can also send a custom message. To write custom messages, you will need to use the arrow buttons to select one character at a time. (There is no QWERTY keyboard on the device.) The device checks for newly received messages at regular "listen" intervals. You can also manually check for messages. To receive messages, the device will need to be in view of satellites.
SOS Button: A dedicated SOS button is located on the right side of the device, covered by a protective cap. If you need help in an emergency, you can press the button to send a default message to the GEOS International Emergency Rescue Coordination Center. The center will determine your location and notify the appropriate emergency responders in the area. You can communicate with the rescue coordination center while you wait for help to arrive. For the first 10 minutes after sending the SOS, inReach mini will send an updated location to the response service each minute. After the first 10 minutes, location data will be sent every 30 minutes if you are stationery, or every 10 minutes if moving. You can cancel the SOS message by pressing the SOS button a second time.
Tracking: Tracking records your path as you travel. As you track, the device logs your location, and updates the track line at a specific log interval (1 second, 1, 2, or 5 minutes). The recorded track log is transmitted over the satellite network at regular intervals. Friends and family can view your track and location on the web-based MapShare portal.
Weather Forecasts: inReach mini can request basic, premium, or marine weather forecasts through a text message. Weather forecasts can be obtained for your current location, a waypoint, GPS coordinates, or other planned destination.
Aviation Services: inReach mini is a supported device for specific aviation flight and rescue services. If you are registered for the Adverse Condition Alerting Service (ACAS) from Lockheed Martin Flight Services (LMFS), you can be prompted on your device to call for an abbreviated briefing regarding specific adverse conditions that may be near the route on your flight plan. In addition, Surveillance-Enhanced Search and Rescue (SE-SAR) and Enhanced Special Reporting Services (eSRS) groups provide automatic satellite monitoring, which can potentially pick up potential flight emergency communications from your device, and order a search and rescue procedure for your aircraft, if needed.
Battery Information: The device has an internal Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which charges via USB with the included Micro USB cable. Typical life of a fully-charged battery is as follows:
Battery Life | Settings |
---|---|
Up to 50 hours | 10-minute tracking with 2-minute logging (default) |
Up to 30 hours | 10-minute tracking with 1-second logging |
Up to 20 days | 30-minute interval power save mode |
Up to 1 year | Powered Off |

We bought this for emergency use when cell/internet services are down, which has happened twice recently. It was easy enough to set up and test. We are treating this like an insurance policy, allowing us to communicate with family to avoid unnecessary worry.
